When ever we are exposed to ultra violet radiation from the sun or artificial source, the melanin acts as a shied just like the ozone layer shielding the earth from UV rays from the sun. Every
time you get exposed to UV rays, the body begins a process - production of melanin to shield us, which in turn makes our skin get darker. So,the more melanin being released the darker we
would get and vice versa. This in fact tells us that the sun is a major player in the darkening of the skin.
To reduce the effect of the sun on our skin colour, it is recommended to wear sunscreens. Sunscreens are substances which you rub on your body regularly to protect your skin from the
effects of the sun on it. Sunscreens work by reflecting the UV rays from the sun. Wearing of protective clothings like hats and sunglasses will also go a long way in reducing darkening of
your skin colour.
Another reason why the body could be prducing or releasing more melanin is due to a condition called Hyper pigmentation. This is when the body cells involved in the production of
melanin becomes damaged thereby disruption its melanin production. It is advised to contact your doctor in this case.
